How to Fix a Leaky Faucet — No Tools Required

Stop that annoying drip and save water with these easy DIY steps. Published by Kuhn Plumbing

Step 1: Make Sure the Handle Is Fully Closed

Sometimes, a handle feels turned off but isn’t tight enough to stop the water.

Try This: Gently turn the handle to a firm close. Don’t force it, but make sure it’s fully shut off. This simple fix often solves minor drips.

Step 2: Clean the Faucet Aerator

A clogged aerator can trap water and make it look like the faucet is leaking.

How To:

  • Wrap a cloth around the tip of the faucet.
  • Unscrew the aerator by hand.
  • Rinse it under warm water.
  • Soak in vinegar if mineral deposits are heavy.
  • Reattach and test.

Step 3: Flush Out the Faucet

Mineral buildup inside your faucet can prevent a proper seal.

Steps:

  • Turn off both hot and cold water under the sink.
  • Open the faucet to release pressure.
  • Turn water back on and let it run for 10–15 seconds.
  • This may help clear debris from inside the faucet body.

Step 4: Watch for Temperature-Related Drips

Some drips are caused by pressure changes after using hot water.

Observation Tip: If the faucet only drips briefly after hot water use, it may be thermal expansion—not a mechanical issue.

When to Call a Plumber

If these quick steps don’t fix the issue, the problem likely involves worn washers, O-rings, or internal cartridges.
